Our History

Our story began in the early 1980s

Thomsons ITM started with a bare block of land in Whatawhata, a portable sawmill, 100m3 of untreated pine and Greg and Trish Thomsons’ will to succeed.

After being granted resource consent to mill and sell timber, Thomsons Timber opened its doors officially in Whatawhata in September 1989. The business quickly expanded to meet the demands of the Waikato’s growing building industry, and in 1991,  the frame & truss plant was built. This was followed by the purchase of Croft’s Timber in 1996 and the first Thomsons Timber Hamilton branch opened on Norton Road. In the mid-2000’s further extension to our Frame & Truss plant which included a full machinery upgrade with automated technology.

Thomsons Timber joined a co-operative group of independent businesses in 2005 – known as ITM. The collective buying power of ITM meant the very best brands could be supplied to customers at the most competitive prices –Thomsons ITM had secured it’s place as a market leader of building supplies in the Waikato.

In 2008, Thomsons ITM Hamilton moved from Norton Road into the current premises on Crawford Road, a flagship store for ITM with a sizeable purpose-built yard and retail building.

In 2014, Thomsons ITM expanded into the Auckland market, and set up a branch in Drury, South Auckland. In 2019, the store moved to its current premises in Hunua Road in Papakura, with drive-through access, and large-format retail store stocking an extensive range of building supplies and hardware.
